Alex Davis Press Kit

Not your average piano bar man, Alex Davis holds a degree in music composition from the University of South Carolina, has worked live sound and as a recording engineer, and has been part of the indie/jazz outfit Passing Worth and the more prog-sounding Miles to Go. Davis has developed an individual style both in his own songwriting and covers of popular hits, both of which he plays at solo outings.

SHORT DESCRIPTIOn

Alex Davis’s love for diverse genres of music is infectious. His bands, Passing Worth (indie/jazz/soul/pop), Miles to Go (prog/pop-rock) and solo works are tied together by his classically trained voice and love of the keyboard. With a Bachelor's of Music Composition and fifteen years of songwriting, Alex integrates fundamental and familiar musical beauty into a richly matured and original sound. His poetry reflects on life’s compelling truths, so often found within honest inconsistency. Moving seamlessly from light-hearted love to passionate hopelessness and on through to assured peace of mind, Alex Davis is laid bare in his own journey. With each song he gives a new story—a new moment that allows listeners to explore thoughts and feelings so easily left unattended.

Full BIO

Alex Davis grew up in a musical household and began writing songs at the piano during his high school years in 2004. He scored his first feature film, Broken Dreams with an orchestral soundtrack in 2006 and began his classical training in music theory shortly after. In 2010 he graduated from University of South Carolina with his Bachelor of Music Composition. That same year, he released his first solo album, Like a Dream (2010). At that time, Alex's sound was a close match to Billy Joel and Elton John - featuring light-hearted teen fun in Sweet Summer Tale and Love You So complimented by lyrical reflections on emotions beyond his years in Happy in Today and Heavy Sleeper

After college he lived and worked full time as an A/V Media Specialist and private Live Sound & Recording Engineer in Columbia, SC. From 2011-2015 he built and worked creatively in his home studio, affectionately called Wentworth Studios. The space provided a safe-haven for exploration as he refined his songwriting and recording engineering technique. Taking the time to synthesize and fuse his collegiate music education with his native songwriting opened a period of prolific writing for him - writing over 350 songs in 2012 alone. His solo work took a very dark turn dealing with existential crisis and brooding paranoia. Meditat Ions (2012) and a live recording of concept album, Half of Ownership (2013) reflected this despondent time in his life.

As musician friends came to the studio, bringing their own style and taste, they helped lift Alex's solo project to evolve into the Alex Davis Band before strategically forming into two bands, Passing Worth (indie/jazz/soul/pop) and Miles to Go (prog/pop-rock). With Alex leading as songwriter, keyboard-vocalist-frontman, recording engineer, and producer, both bands released full length albums. Miles to Go released Gypsy (2013) - a semi-concept album reflecting Alex's darker and more mysterious thoughts edged by nostalgia and pointed frustration.

"The Fender Rhodes patch on Alex Davis’ keyboard gets a workout on Gypsy." - Patrick Wall, Free Times (Columbia, SC)

Passing Worth released Getting Over You (2015) marrying Alex's piano-pop with a depth of soul, jazz, blues and even a pinch of funk from excellent musicians, Cassy Renee (vocals), Moses Andrews (vocals, organ, bass), Alex Skiro (guitar), and Pat Chapman (drums). While a feel-good album at heart, Getting Over You deals with the varying hues of coping with lost love.

"The songs on Getting Over You are incredibly pleasant numbers that draw from blues, jam and neo-soul — just not the sharp edges, mind you."

- Corbie Hill, Free Times (Columbia, SC)

In July of 2015, Alex moved upstate to Greenville, SC to take on music composition and private recording engineering full-time. He began his "New Music Blog" on musicofalexdavis.com, sharing his new pieces as musical reflections. Alex is touring solo, Passing Worth, and Miles to Go shows throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, sharing his original music from each of his projects at every performance. Miles to Go's second album, Perspective will be released in the fall of 2018.
